Incident: Friday, August 28, 2026, about 7:48 p.m., the 13500 block of Foothill Boulevard near Hubbard Street in Sylmar. Reported by the Los Angeles Police Department that night and updated Saturday, August 29.

A Los Angeles Police Department officer was working an earlier multi-vehicle collision. A neighbor who saw it, Chris Salvi, told KTLA the officer was filling out paperwork on the hood of the patrol car when a car came fast around the corner and struck the officer.

The officer suffered multiple serious injuries, was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center and underwent surgery Saturday morning, and was later described as being in stable condition. The officer has not been named, and LAPD has not released a division or years of service.

Investigators found the suspect vehicle abandoned and took a man into custody at a home on Sutter Avenue in Pacoima. Luis Valdez, 44, was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and is held on $155,000 bail. He was treated for minor injuries. No filing decision has been announced.

A relative told KTLA the man knocked on their door, bloody, before he was handcuffed, and said he had run over a police officer. “He said he didn’t have brakes, so he was very scared and struggling,” said Eva Bernal, the suspect’s second cousin-in-law.

LAPD is investigating. No shots were fired.
