What this site is
Former Lawman publishes commentary and analysis on officer-involved shootings, use of force, crime and law enforcement news. It is journalism and opinion. It is not legal advice, tactical instruction, firearms training, medical advice, or a substitute for your agency’s policy or your own attorney.
Analysis of an incident is based on the record available at the time of publication — bodycam footage, public reports, court filings and statements. Facts change as investigations close. When we get something wrong, we correct it under our Corrections Policy.
Nothing on this site accuses any person of a crime or reaches a legal conclusion about one. Commentary addresses conduct and decisions on the record.
Your use of the site
You may read, link to, and share this site’s content. You may not:
- Republish articles in full without written permission
- Scrape, mirror, or feed the site to an automated system without permission
- Use the content to harass, dox, or threaten any person, including any officer, subject or family member named in a report
- Interfere with the site’s operation or security
- Represent yourself as affiliated with Former Lawman when you are not
Comments and submissions
Comments are moderated. Doxxing, threats, calls for violence against anyone — officer or civilian — and abuse directed at victims’ families get removed and get the account banned. Nothing about that is negotiable.
Anything you submit — a comment, a tip, a message — you grant Former Lawman a non-exclusive right to publish and archive. Do not send anything you are not authorized to send. If you are an officer sending material, that is on you and your agency’s policy.
Intellectual property
Original written content, graphics and video produced by Former Lawman are its property. Bodycam footage, agency releases, court documents and news imagery appearing on this site are used for commentary, criticism and news reporting under fair use, and remain the property of their owners. Rights holders with a takedown request should use the Contact page.
Advertising and affiliate links
This site carries advertising and affiliate links, disclosed in full on the Affiliate Disclosure page. Purchases made through those links are transactions between you and the seller. Former Lawman is not the seller, does not ship, does not handle returns, and is not party to any warranty. Take up any problem with an order directly with the merchant.
Third-party links
Links to outside sites are provided as sources or as commerce links. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or privacy practices.
No warranty, and the limit of liability
The site is provided “as is.” Former Lawman makes no warranty that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any analysis is complete. To the fullest extent allowed by law, Former Lawman is not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising from your use of the site or of anything you bought through it.
Changes
These terms can change. The date at the top is the effective date. Continued use after a change is acceptance of it.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Arizona, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
