The department said the officer was transferred by ambulance to a local hospital and was in stable condition. The extent of the officer’s injuries was not released.
The department said the identities of the officer and the incarcerated man are not being released because the investigation is open.
Corrections Commissioner Jared Garcia said the department has “zero tolerance for these kinds of attacks” and that “we are unified in our resolve to stop them.”
Garcia said he was confident the officer would fully recover, KSL reported.
Both the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison and the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City were placed on lockdown Thursday pending the investigation, the department said.
No charges had been announced as of Thursday night. Whether the lockdown has since been lifted was not reported.
The department said it was declining to release further details while the investigation continues.
