Incident: Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in the Channelview area of east Harris County, Texas. Reported by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez the same night, with a Blue Alert activated Thursday morning, October 1.
A Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot Wednesday evening after responding to a family disturbance call in the 1100 block of Bayou Drive near the East Freeway, Gonzalez said.
The deputy was struck in the lower half of the body and was taken to a hospital in fair condition. The sheriff’s office has not released the deputy’s name or years of service.

A suspect fled the scene in the deputy’s patrol car, Gonzalez said. The patrol car was later recovered near the East Freeway and Dell Dale Street.
Investigators identified the man they were looking for as Chase Layne Patin, 25. In a post Wednesday night, the sheriff’s office described him as a white male last seen in a black cap and a gray shirt, and told residents not to approach him and to call 911.
A Blue Alert was activated Thursday morning. Residents in the area were told to expect an increased law enforcement presence while the search continued.
Patin was taken into custody Thursday morning. Harris County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Aaron Waybright said Patin was found hiding in a backyard shed along a wood line behind a home off West Brentwood in Channelview, came out of the shed with hands up and was taken into custody without incident. Deputies, U.S. marshals and Harris County Precinct 3 constables had canvassed the area overnight. KPRC reported that a resident called authorities after dogs began barking near the structure.
Gonzalez said the deputy remains hospitalized and is expected to recover. KPRC reported Thursday afternoon, citing charging documents, that the deputy was struck in both legs, sustained additional injuries, underwent surgery at Memorial Hermann Hospital and was listed in stable condition. CBS Austin reported Thursday that the deputy remained hospitalized and in good spirits. The sheriff’s office had earlier described the condition as fair.
KPRC reported Thursday afternoon that Patin faces five felony charges: four counts of aggravated assault of a public servant with a firearm, naming four Harris County deputies, and one count of theft of property valued between $30,000 and $150,000. A Harris County homicide sergeant confirmed to CBS Austin that charges had been filed and said more could follow.
Patin was kept out of a probable cause proceeding Thursday night. KPRC reported that the judge said he was being combative and that he was kept out of the courtroom for safety reasons. His bond was not set Thursday night. Prosecutors are asking that he remain jailed without bond, and he is scheduled for a preliminary appearance Monday morning in the 482nd District Court.
The sheriff’s office has not said whether the deputy or any other officer fired a weapon.
