A high-risk narcotics warrant. An armed subject inside who doesn’t comply. Here’s what happened, what investigators found, and how it was ruled.
Bradenton PD’s SWAT team and Narcotics Unit executed a high-risk search warrant at a home on 10th Avenue West on March 10. This wasn’t a guess — it was built on real probable cause. Contact was made with 56-year-old Willie Tyrone Bell, who was inside holding a silver revolver. An officer fired. Bell was killed at the scene.
That’s the shoot. It’s not complicated. High-risk narcotics warrant, an armed subject who doesn’t comply. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement spent months on this investigation, and on July 17 the State Attorney’s Office ruled it lawful and justified. Investigators recovered four firearms from the home along with 46.1 grams of MDMA, 31.4 grams of marijuana, and 4.4 grams of crack cocaine. The threat was real, and so was the warrant behind it.
Under Graham v. Connor, this is about as straightforward as it gets. Officers on a warrant they knew carried a firearm risk encountered a subject holding a revolver. That’s a lawful use of force with no ambiguity in the sequence.
Worth mentioning briefly: the officer who fired is audibly shaken in the moments after. Hands unsteady, voice cracking, needing to be walked to an air-conditioned car before he can process what happened. That’s a normal adrenaline response, not a sign anything went wrong. Even experienced SWAT operators carry weight after taking a life, and it’s worth remembering the next time somebody assumes otherwise.
