Traffic stop. 7:30 p.m. 64-year-old male.

Suspect is dead. Officer was shot.

Video

I’m not breaking down the video circulating right now. Not enough context. There was a lot going on in that one…

Here’s what’s confirmed right now.

What we know:

Edwards initiated a traffic stop on Blount Street near the Magnolia Village Apartments. The driver — Robert Williams, 64 — produced a firearm and shot him. Edwards returned fire. Williams was struck and later died at Hale County Hospital. Edwards was transported and is recovering.

If body cam releases, there are specific things I want to see. The approach. The contact. The moment the situation changed. Whether Edwards had any indication before Williams drew. How fast it all happened.

A new officer. Alone. Against an armed suspect who made the decision to shoot first.

He returned fire. He’s alive.

That matters.

Full breakdown coming if the body cam drops.
