The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office declined to release the deputy’s name or photograph, saying the deputy is early in a law enforcement career and may seek undercover assignments.
“Today’s incident serves as a stark reminder that despite our best efforts, detention center operations can be extremely dangerous,” Sheriff Craig Owens said. “Our deputy remains in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery. I commend our jail staff and leadership for their swift actions to care for their coworker, protect other detainees, and maintain order.”
The detainee was identified as Antonio Rumbel, 21. Rumbel was being held on a murder charge in connection with his father’s death in Tennessee and was awaiting extradition to that state.
Rumbel has been charged with aggravated battery on a police officer.
Rumbel is now held at the jail’s highest security level in a single-cell padded block. Any movement out of the cell requires two deputies and a supervisor, the sheriff’s office said.
What preceded the attack has not been released. The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit is investigating.
Atlanta News First reported on September 29 that the deputy was expected to return to work about a week after the attack.
