An NYPD recruit collapsed during training at the Police Academy on Monday and died.
The NYPD identified him as probationary officer Kamir Loubarria, who started service with the department in April 2026. He was roughly five months into his training.

Loubarria collapsed during a workout. The New York Daily News reported that he went down at about 12:40 p.m. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“Our hearts are heavy following the death of our brother police officer who collapsed during training at the Police Academy today,” PBA President Patrick Hendry said in a statement posted Monday. “Although his NYPD career was just beginning, he was already a hero, simply for choosing to raise his right hand and dedicate his life to protecting New Yorkers.”
The NYPD said in its own statement: “Kamir was committed to a life of service and helping to keep New York City safe. The entire NYPD mourns this devastating loss.”
The cause of death has not been released. The medical examiner will determine it. The department has not said what preceded the collapse, and has not released his age or any medical history.
