On June 14, 2026, at approximately 10:26 p.m., Santa Ana Police officers responded to a family disturbance call in Santa Ana, California. What started as a welfare check on an out-of-control teenager ended with that teenager dead and his stepfather bleeding from a stab wound.
The Call
The caller told dispatch his fiancée’s 15-year-old son, Jaden Machaka, was popping pills and becoming violent. He said Jaden had a history of drug use, violence, and property destruction inside the apartment. Dispatch told him and his fiancée to get out of the apartment before officers arrived.

They didn’t make it out in time.
The Stabbing
Before the caller and his fiancée could leave, Jaden stabbed him in the upper right arm with a kitchen knife. Jaden then locked the apartment door in a way that couldn’t be opened with a key, trapping himself inside with his mother.
Officers arrived to find the stabbing victim outside, wound visible, telling them Jaden’s mother was still inside — and that he was afraid Jaden would hurt her. Officers advised dispatch that Jaden was now a suspect in a felony assault with a deadly weapon.
The Barricade
With Jaden and his mother locked inside, officers held position at the door. They could hear him yelling. They could hear her pleading with him in Spanish to drop the knife.
That combination — a suspect who had already stabbed someone, now alone with a second person he was believed to pose a danger to — is as close to a no-win clock as this job produces. Officers made the call to breach.
The Shooting
When officers entered, Jaden advanced on them with a second knife — a different weapon than the one used on his stepfather. Officers fired. He was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
The stepfather was treated for a non-life-threatening stab wound. The mother was not physically harmed.
What the Record Shows
Santa Ana Police had prior contact with this address on allegations of assault and criminal threats. This wasn’t the first time this kid’s violence had put people in that apartment at risk.
Under Graham v. Connor, the standard for evaluating force isn’t hindsight — it’s what a reasonable officer would do facing the same facts in that moment. A suspect who has already used a knife on one victim, now alone in a locked room with a second person he’s threatening, advancing on officers with a weapon after a breach — that’s the textbook definition of an immediate threat with no time to de-escalate further than they already had.
This case remains subject to the department’s standard review process for officer-involved shootings, as is protocol in every case like this.
