Chicago, Illinois — July 4, 2026
Two Chicago police officers were shot during a traffic stop in the South Shore neighborhood on the city’s South Side. The suspect was also struck by gunfire and was listed in critical condition following the exchange. Investigators have not released further details on the officers’ conditions or what prompted the stop.

Citrus Heights, California — July 5, 2026
Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies opened fire on a driver Sunday morning after a pursuit shut down eastbound Interstate 80 near Greenback Lane and Antelope Road. The suspect had fled the scene of a domestic violence call before deputies located the vehicle and gave chase. No further details on injuries or arrests have been released.
Memphis, Tennessee — July 5, 2026
Tennessee National Guard members fatally shot 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson early Sunday morning near the intersection of Ida B. Wells Avenue and Gayoso Avenue in downtown Memphis. Memphis police and Guard soldiers were responding to a shots-fired call and pursued Johnson on foot after he was identified as armed. Johnson fired shots during the pursuit and turned toward Guard members while holding his weapon, prompting soldiers to return fire and strike him. National Guard medical personnel administered first aid, but Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or Guardsmen were injured.
Brooklyn, New York — July 4, 2026
A masked gunman opened fire at a family barbecue near Coney Island beach, wounding eight people, including four children. The NYPD is investigating the shooting, which occurred during Fourth of July gatherings in the area. No arrests have been announced.
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina — July 4, 2026
Seven people were injured in a shooting at Coligny Beach Saturday night following a fight between two groups. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office arrested four St. Helena Island residents in connection with the gunfire. The victims are recovering from their injuries.
Newport Beach, California — July 4, 2026
Newport Beach police clashed with large crowds during a chaotic Fourth of July, with fireworks thrown at officers as fights broke out throughout the night. Approximately 400 people were arrested amid the unrest, which some reports have tied to a large gathering promoted on social media. The Newport Beach Police Association has since commended the department’s handling of the incident.
New York, New York — July 5, 2026
A seaplane carrying eight passengers made a hard landing and crashed into the East River near the NY Skyport on East 23rd Street Sunday afternoon. The aircraft had been carrying passengers from the Hamptons. Two people were injured, and emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Highland Papua, Indonesia — July 3, 2026
Indonesian security forces recovered the body of American pilot Nicholas F. Gosselin after separatist fighters claimed responsibility for shooting him and burning his aircraft at a remote airstrip. Authorities say the seven Papuan passengers survived the attack as security forces launched operations to pursue those responsible.
Fort Worth, Texas — June 25, 2026
Leon Segura, a Texas father, rescued two young girls from a burning home on McCart Avenue in south Fort Worth near the TCU campus. Segura was driving past the home around 3 a.m. when he heard screaming, forced his way into the house through a glass door and carried both unconscious girls to safety. He suffered smoke inhalation, burns and cuts during the rescue and was treated at a hospital before being released. The Fort Worth Fire Department credited his actions with saving the girls’ lives.
Washington, D.C. — July 4–5, 2026
The United States marked the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a fireworks display over the National Mall that organizers say launched roughly 850,000 pyrotechnic effects across 40 minutes, aiming to surpass the previous Guinness World Record of 810,904 fireworks set by a church in the Philippines in 2016. The show, produced by Pyrotecnico and backed by the White House’s Freedom 250 task force, fired from 10 locations stretching from the National Mall to West Potomac Park, including eight barges on the Potomac River. President Donald Trump attended the display, which capped a weekend of Independence Day celebrations honoring the nation’s semiquincentennial.
