Incident: the night of Tuesday, September 1, 2026, in Rainier, Washington. First reported early Wednesday, September 2, and updated by the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office through Wednesday morning.
Thurston County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a domestic violence call at a home in Rainier, southeast of Olympia, arriving around 9:10 p.m. Tuesday. On arrival, deputies were advised that there was a dead body inside the home.
A resident at the scene, described by the sheriff’s office as appearing to be in crisis, was told to wait outside until medics arrived. Instead, that person ran back into the house and locked the doors.

When two deputies moved to force their way in, shots were fired at them through the door. Neither deputy was struck by gunfire.
A deputy returned fire. Both deputies pulled back from the house, and one of them sustained what the sheriff’s office described as an immobilizing leg injury while retreating under fire. That deputy was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
A SWAT team was called out and surrounded the residence. According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect fired at deputies and their armored vehicles numerous times during the standoff. A sheriff’s office sniper returned fire and struck the suspect.
Deputies then used armored vehicles to tear an opening into the home’s bathroom, where the suspect had taken cover. Deputies were able to establish communication, and the suspect surrendered.
Sheriff Derek Sanders said early Wednesday morning that the suspect was in custody with non-life-threatening injuries. The standoff had run through the night.
Washington State Patrol troopers, Yelm police officers, a regional SWAT team and medics responded to the scene.
The injured deputy has not been named and the deputy’s years of service have not been released. The suspect has not been identified and charges have not been announced.
The person found dead inside the home has not been identified. No cause of death has been released and no relationship to anyone else at the scene has been stated. The specific circumstances of the original domestic violence call have not been released.
The sheriff’s office has not named an outside agency to investigate the deputies’ use of force, and has said it will issue a formal press release once the incident is resolved. No body camera or scene video has been released.
An earlier account carried by at least one outlet reported that the deputy had been shot. That outlet has since corrected it, citing Sheriff Sanders: the deputy was injured while being shot at.
