At about 2 p.m., Woodland police dispatch received a 911 call from a residence near Johnston Street and Alice Street. The caller, his mother, said her son was trying to kill himself with a rifle. She told officers he had locked the security door and was armed with a handgun.
A crisis negotiator reached him by phone. According to police, he said he had been drinking and hung up. He fired shots inside the home, and later said he wanted to harm himself and that an officer would need to “take him out.” He then opened the front door and fired shots outside.
