At about 12:17 p.m., officers saw him step outside a motel room and go back inside. An officer approached and directed him to come outside. He came out holding a rifle and pointed it at the officer, who ordered him to drop the weapon and took cover behind a vehicle. He then turned the rifle toward a second officer.
The first officer fired, striking him. He fell and dropped a handgun, then picked it up while the officer continued ordering him to drop it. Seconds later, he shot himself, police said.
Dallas Fire-Rescue attempted life-saving measures. He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 12:31 p.m. No officers were injured.
The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit is investigating. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and will conduct an independent investigation. The Office of Community Police Oversight also responded. The investigation remains ongoing.
