Incident: Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Mustang Inn, 400 block of South R.L. Thornton Freeway, Dallas, Texas. Footage released by the Dallas Police Department on Friday, October 16, 2026.

According to the Dallas Police Department, officers assigned to the Southwest Crime Response Team were searching for a 41-year-old man wanted on four felony probation violation warrants involving narcotics, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and evading arrest in a vehicle.

At about 11:15 a.m., an automated license plate reader identified a vehicle associated with him near Clarendon Drive and Beckley Avenue. Officers located the vehicle at the Mustang Inn.

At about 12:17 p.m., officers saw him step outside a motel room and go back inside. An officer approached and directed him to come outside. He came out holding a rifle and pointed it at the officer, who ordered him to drop the weapon and took cover behind a vehicle. He then turned the rifle toward a second officer.

The first officer fired, striking him. He fell and dropped a handgun, then picked it up while the officer continued ordering him to drop it. Seconds later, he shot himself, police said.

Dallas Fire-Rescue attempted life-saving measures. He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 12:31 p.m. No officers were injured.

The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit is investigating. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and will conduct an independent investigation. The Office of Community Police Oversight also responded. The investigation remains ongoing.

The video above is the Dallas Police Department’s own release: the department’s briefing followed by body-worn camera and surveillance footage.
