The sheriff’s office has not said whether the deputy fired. The deputy has not been identified.

Deputies closed Shiloh Heights Road between Pipeline Road and Edgefield Highway and searched the area with drones, with help from the North Augusta Department of Public Safety, the Aiken Department of Public Safety and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies had been looking for a silver or gray Hyundai Tucson, which was found around 4 a.m. Thursday.

The shooter has not been identified, and no description had been released as of Thursday morning. The sheriff’s office said it did not believe the suspect was still in the immediate area. No arrest had been announced.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken over the investigation. The sheriff’s office said state investigators will release further information.

It is the second time this month an Aiken County deputy has been shot. On October 5, a deputy was shot and run over near Scotch Lane; deputies returned fire and the driver died.
